The pool is the ultimate cool spot, it feels amazing and can heal souls. That’s why I’ve made a list of people who should have benefited from it.

Here are a few stories from this project. If you'd like to see more, just let me know!

Mrs. Dubois, my first-grade teacher. One day, when I was so sick that I threw up on her cardigan, she still insisted I finish my homework. Her red pen was terrifying and a sure sign of bad weekends at home. She always had an apple in her drawer. Her son was in my class, and her husband was her substitute teacher. That family was everywhere.I think, deep down, she might have been nice, but it probably would have done her some good to enjoy an afternoon at the pool.

I always have a sweater with me or on me. My colleagues have theories about my temperature scale. I’m the killjoy who asks to close the window. An expert in off-topic comments, I sometimes manage to derail a conversation completely. I’m prescribing myself a well-heated pool and some intensive underwater training. A break is sometimes necessary.

These portraits capture people as their coolness fades, leaving behind joy and community. The project reflects on how losing touch with fun and a childlike spirit impacts us and those around us.

Inspired by personal experiences from my strict teacher to my grumpy neighbor it asks us to consider who might need a moment of joy, including ourselves.
